Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

An eyelid lift or blepharoplasty operation is designed to address wrinkles, deep lines and puffiness around your eyes. These may be as a result of age, sun exposure or hereditary factors, which can leave you looking tired or create an aged appearance. This procedure aims to restore a more rested and youthful appearance to your eyes.

UPPER EYELID LIFT

The aging process leads to stretching of the upper eyelid skin which causes sagging and excess skin to develop. In addition, there may be bulging of fat in certain areas and/or loss of volume (fat) in others.
Together these processes create what we call a “hooding” effect as well as upper eyelid bags and can make you look tired and unhappy when you’re not. An upper eyelid lift, or upper blepharoplasty, restores a natural, more youthful contour to the upper eyelid by removing excess skin and either removing or injecting fat depending on your individual needs.

An upper blepharoplasty may be done under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. Experiencing some bruising around the eyelid area for about a week is common. A very thin suture is kept in place while the skin heals and this is removed at around a week following surgery.

LOWER EYELID LIFT

Aging in the lower eyelid is caused by a combination of excess skin and changes in the volume and position of the fat, which is unique to each individual. A lower blepharoplasty addresses these changes by excising excess skin along with either excision or rearrangement of the fat pads under the eyes that cause “bags” or fat injections to restore volume where needed. Your individual requirements will be assessed and a plan formulated to restore a more youthful eyelid contour. This is all done using a well-hidden incision placed beneath the lower eyelashes.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery typically requires either IV sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on any accompanying procedures, a return to more normal activity may take 1-2 weeks. Proper skincare and sun protection including sunglasses, are essential during healing. Natural aging will continue after your eyelid surgery.
